Original McEwen Lumber Company facilities, Azalea, N.C., 1903-1923

Wooster Baird McEwen, Founder of McEwen Lumber Company
In 1899, with the then princely sum of $2,000, 25-year old Wooster McEwen began a lumber supply company in Asheville, North Carolina. Mr. McEwen soon began to establish a reputation among Ashville craftsmen and artisans for service and quality products.

As this reputation grew, so did the company. Over the first half of the Twentieth Century, the McEwen Company established several more operation sites: first in North Carolina, then nearby Virginia and eventually throughout the southeastern United States. From the days of true horse power, through two world wars and a major economic depression, McEwen Lumber thrived with its high quality standards for both products and service.

Today, the McEwen Company stretches across the Southeast from North Carolina to Florida to Tennessee, and to points far west in Arizona. Although far greater in scope than even its founder might have dreamed, the McEwen Company hasn't forgotten the ideals that made it successful.

It was those ideals that attracted Hood Industries in their purchase of the company in 1995. They were looking for stability - and promise. Hood saw in McEwen a kindred spirit - a company that values satisfied, long-standing customers, and a company eager to grow.

Rather than meddle with success, McEwen's parent company has continued to build on this proven foundation. As a result, McEwen customers still find the same commitment to excellence Wooster McEwen instilled in our company a century ago.
